The skilled, craftsmanship of the early Scottish stonemasons, is evident in the picturesque town of Perth, Ontario. Evidence of thier superb craftsmanship is seen in many of the beautiful limestone buildings tat stand majestically in this small town. One such building, is Code's Mill, located in the heart of Perth. Situated on the Tay River, this regal structure overlooks Stewart Park, one of the town's most beautiful landscaped areas.
Code's Mill represents over 150 years of manufacturing activity and is a significant example of industrial architecture. The first industrial process on the Code's Mill site, was a tannery owned by the Kilpatrick Family in 1842. A town plan for 1863, shows the outline of the factory, similar to the building which now stands there.
In the 1880's, Mr. T.A. Code, established the Code's Custom Mill and served the Perth area with it's carding, spinning, fulling, shearing, pressing, and colouring of yarn, hosery, socks, gloves, sporting goods, sweaters, and mitts. Another change came in 1899, when T.A. Code introduced a felt-making process, and the Mill was renamed Code Mill. In 1903, the Herriott Street addition was completed, making it "one of the most handsome industrial buildings in Eastern Ontario".
IN 1958 T.A. Code died, and the family continued to run the business until 1973, when the Mill was sold to Geeorge Merrick, Robert Peskett, and Lowell Yorke of Perth. They continued to manufacture felt products, such as boot liners, bulk felt, and typewriter pads.
In 1976, the centenial year celebration of Code's Felt's founding the brass whistle, which was used to summon the workers, was discovered in the warehouse. The company recieved permission from the town to start it up again, and it's shrill echoed from the Code's Mill roof, untill the closing of the factory in 1988.
The following year, John Stewart began renovating it to it's presend day grandeur. This charming limestone building isnow used as a commercial facility, including Fiddleheads, shops, and office space. From it's beginnings as a tannery to it's present splendor, Code's Mill truly symbolizes the heritage of Historic Perth.
